The First Video: Sailing Solo Across the Gulf of Mexico

This whole adventure started officially on January 10th, 2009.  That was the day I left Red Fish Island in Galveston Bay, Texas to sail solo to Isla Mujeres, Mexico.  Until this jump I’d never been offshore, alone, overnight.  I took hours and hours of footage video diary style and never knew how to edit the stock.  As I’ve learned to use some simple editing tools a bit better I reloaded all the old footage and cut it down to the 10 minutes of video below.  It is crazy to look back at how naive and scared I was on this first crossing.  I am grateful for the confidence that time and experience impart.

On another note, I am fully into getting Jargo ready to go sailing again.  The New Zealand summer is coming to a close which means it is time for me to head back up and into the tropics.  I have eight days to finish a few engine projects and get my rigging refit done enough that I can safely move the boat from my slip over to the yard where a travel crane can pull me out of the water and set me on blocks on the hard.  From there I’ll pull the prop shaft and slap a coat or two of anti-fouling paint on the bottom of the hull.

I haven’t written much since I made landfall in New Zealand, but I think I feel the habit starting to creep back into my routine.  I’ve got an important article to write for a new sponsor and I hope to have it out early next week.  While I play with words I’ve been spending a lot of time looking at routes out of New Zealand.  Nothing is ever set in stone with me, but I think I’ll head NW to New Caledonia then over to Bundaberg, Australia for some sailing in the SE trade winds inside the Great Barrier Reef.

I guess I am back so lets get moving.

Lee, This was fabulous. It was a time when Dad and I were more scared than you and were watching you every second we could on Spot. God, we were relieved when you arrived in Isla!!!

Great job on the video. It must be fun to take a look at the sailor you "were" when you look at the sailor you are now.

Great job Lee! I've been following your blog for awhile and in the process of finishing the refit on my boat to go and do this as well. Thanks for the inspiration and the reminder of why it's good to throw up the lines and go.
